As a business owner, one of the first questions I get is, "What do you do?" When I respond with, "I’m an Interior Designer," the conversation often turns to sofas, drapes, or paint colors.

While those details are part of what I do, they barely scratch the surface. The confusion is understandable—terms like Designer, Decorator, Stager, and Stylist are often used interchangeably.

In Texas, where there’s no licensing board regulating these titles, understanding the distinctions is even more important. Let’s explore what each professional does and how choosing the right expert can elevate your project.

INTERIOR DESIGNER

Interior designers are the architects of interior spaces. With a focus on functionality, aesthetics, and technical details, we balance creativity with practical solutions. Designers handle:

Kavindra Watson, Interior Designer
  • Structural Considerations: We collaborate with contractors to reconfigure layouts, ensuring flow, safety, and compliance with building codes.

  • Material Selections: From flooring to cabinetry, we select materials that align with your vision and lifestyle.

  • Custom Designs: Whether it’s a built-in feature or bespoke furniture, we create tailored solutions.

  • Floorplan and Specifications: Interior Designers provide detailed blueprints that outline the exact layout of the space, including electrical and mechanical plans. Additionally, we specify finishes, fixtures, and materials, creating a comprehensive guide for contractors during construction or renovation. This ensures every element is executed precisely to bring the design vision to life.

Think of an interior designer as your partner in crafting a cohesive, functional, and luxurious living environment from concept to completion.

INTERIOR DECORATOR

While designers reimagine spaces, decorators finesse them. Decorators focus on:

  • Aesthetic Enhancements: Selecting colors, furniture, and accessories to reflect your style.

  • Surface-Level Changes: Working with existing layouts without altering structural elements.

  • Seasonal and Thematic Designs: Perfect for refreshing a room with a new look or seasonal updates.

Decorators are ideal for clients looking to update the look of their space without making major renovations. Designers can decorate; however, Decorators don’t typically design, as they focus on surface-level enhancements and do not engage in structural changes or technical aspects of a space.

HOME STAGER

Stagers specialize in preparing homes for sale. Their goal is to make a property appealing to the widest range of potential buyers. Key tasks include:

  • Neutralizing Spaces: Removing overly personalized elements so buyers can envision themselves in the home.

  • Highlighting Features: Arranging furniture and décor to emphasize a home’s best attributes.

  • Market Readiness: Aligning the staging with current trends to maximize buyer interest.

Home staging is a short-term investment aimed at selling properties quickly and at a higher value. In a slower market, staging becomes even more essential to attract buyers and stand out in a competitive market.

STYLISTS

Stylists focus on short-term transformations, often for specific purposes like photoshoots or events. Their work includes:

  • Visual Storytelling: Using furniture, décor, and lighting to create picture-perfect moments.

  • Temporary Arrangements: Styling for a specific occasion, with less emphasis on long-term functionality.

  • Creative Flourishes: Adding unique touches that bring personality to a space.

Stylists excel at creating Instagram-worthy setups, editorial-ready interiors, or adding flair for events.

Which Do You Need?

  • If you’re planning a remodel or want to invest in a space designed to last, hire an Interior Designer.

  • If you want to refresh your home with new décor, consider an Interior Decorator.

  • Selling your home? A Stager will help it stand out in the market.

  • For a photoshoot or one-time event, a Stylist is your go-to.

Depending on the size of your project, your Interior Designer may also engage a Decorator or Stylist to complement the overall vision.
